Barrhead, with 4,200 residents, is 122 km from Edmonton on scenic Highway 33.
The town was named in 1914 by the Paddle River and District Co-operative for Barrhead, Scotland (in Renfrewshire, just southwest of Glasgow), the birthplace of one of the area's earliest settlers, James McGuire. The whole town was moved from its original townsite in 1912, to meet the expanding railway lines. Barrhead has grown and prospered at its new/present location.
The Klondyke Ferry Crossing is a cabled ferry crossing the Athabasca River, one of nine river ferries in Alberta. The town has an arena,a Kinsmen Aquatic Centre, and an 18-hole golf course, the Misty Ridge Ski Hill, a Sportsground, and the nearby Thunder Lake Provincial Park.
