Stony Plain is an agricultural centre in Parkland County, just 15 minutes west of Edmonton on Highway 16 and 16A. Early settlers were attracted by plentiful water, fish and game in 1881. In 1892, the community's name was changed from Dogrump Creek to Stony Plain. 16 murals around the town's "Heritage Walk" depict the town's history.
SchoolsStony Plain is served by the Parkland School Division No. 70 and the Evergreen Catholic Separate Regional Division #2. Spruce Gove has 1 public elementary schools, 3 public elmentary/middle schools, and 1 public high school, as well as 1 Catholic elementary school, with older students bussed to nearby Spruce Grove. There other small private schools in the community. NorQuest College also operates a small satellite campus, offering a variety of adult academic upgrading programs. ShoppingStony Plain has a number of stores and services in its central business district, along Highway 16A. RecreationThe Town of Stony Plain (with Spruce Grove) jointly owns & operates the new TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre sports complex. The town is home to several important civic and cultural institutions such as the Stony Plain Public Library, the Multicultural Heritage Centre, and the Pioneer Museum. The town has three major parks, a skate park, a BMX park, and a green path system running through the middle of the town.
